San Cristobal, Ecuador

Trip Perspectives
I’m a nature and adventure traveler with a focus on what I like to call “approachable adventures.” I love excitement and a good adrenaline rush, but I focus on finding them in activities anyone with a basic fitness level and no special skills can do — think snorkeling, easy-to-moderate hikes, 4-wheeling, ziplines, etc.
My overall travel style centers around nature, wildlife, scenic destinations, unique accommodations, and memorable adventures.
As a whole, I focus on places that offer authentic experiences that really allow me to dive into the culture or beautiful landscapes that leave a lasting impression. I believe great travel should inspire people while also being practical, so I love sharing honest insights, detailed guides, and useful tips that help others plan their own unforgettable trips with minimal unwanted surprises!
The Galapagos Islands are famous worldwide, but what makes San Cristobal specifically stand out to you?
As someone who loves nature, easy adventures, and wildlife, San Cristobal was an absolute dream! First off, the island is absolutely gorgeous! There are a couple of small towns, but most of the island is protected wilderness with an incredible mix of turquoise waters, rugged rocks, soft sand, and vibrant reefs.
Beyond that, the wildlife in the Galapagos Islands is absolutely unmatched! While specific species and creatures can vary by island, San Cristobal is home to Galapagos Sea Lions, black iguanas, giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, sharks, and more!
And last but not least, it’s so easy to experience all aspects of this island with snorkeling tours, easy hikes, and sanctuary visits that are exciting without being exhausting.
I think part of what makes San Cristobal so wonderful is that it isn’t necessarily limited to one very specific type of traveler. My biggest recommendation would be someone who loves nature and wildlife.
However, I visited with a large group that included solo travelers, couples, and families, and everyone was able to enjoy the island together.
But the Galapagos Islands are also the safest place in all of Ecuador, so it’s a fantastic spot for solo travelers and family groups who prioritize that.
What are your absolute favorite experiences or must-see spots on San Cristobal?
The Giant Tortoise Reserve is also so amazing, and you’ll get to see giant tortoises in all stages of life and learn about how they’re replenishing the population on San Cristobal.
Last (and my absolute favorite), take a 360 Snorkeling Tour with Galapagos Eco Fishing and ask for Christian to be your guide. You’ll spend an incredible day at 3 of the island’s best snorkeling spots (Bahia Rosa Blanca, Bahia Sardina, and Kicker Rock), and lunch is included. I saw so many incredible tropical fish and sea turtles, and actually got to swim with some sea lions who approached the group.
Ecuador is known for a variety of dishes across its regions, but the islands are a great spot for seafood (especially ceviche), if that interests you.
However, there are also great pastries (try Super Samy Panneria and Kachi Tanta Bakery), and the convenience stores carry many unique items I’ve never seen anywhere else.
My biggest tip is to skip the boardwalk. The meals I had there were overpriced and nothing to write home about.
But my favorite meal of the entire trip (and one of the top 3 in my life) was at a little restaurant called Picanteria Sarita. It is clearly a local spot, and the menu is limited, but the food was worth visiting twice for! Meals were just $6 at the time (2023) and included 2 full plates of food with a delicious assortment of meat, beans, rice, and veggies.
How would you describe the San Cristobal evening vibe or nightlife?
There’s really not a lot of nightlife in San Cristobal. There might have been a club or two, but we didn’t find anything too wild.
However, the islands are the safest place in Ecuador, and our guide told us it was perfectly safe to walk around alone at night, stay out late, and even flash money around. So if you do find some nightlife, feel free to let loose!
You mentioned that San Cristobal is the safest place in Ecuador. What should travelers know about navigating the island comfortably?
The people here were extremely friendly, and we had no negative experiences.
However, some people only speak limited “tourist” English, so it’s always a good (and considerate) idea to know a bit of Spanish or have a translator app handy. A lot of signage and the ATMs are also in Spanish, so you’ll do yourself a favor by having that.
Otherwise, the island is simple to get around, especially if you have a guide for the day, and crime is essentially nonexistent.
The Galapagos sounds like a pricey trip. What should travelers know about budgeting for a trip to San Cristobal?
The Galapagos Islands are more affordable than you might think! The biggest cost item will likely be your flight. But if you keep an eye on them, you can find reasonable prices from Florida through LATAM.
You will have to stop in either Quito or Guayaquil for a layover, so you might also save money by booking your trip in separate “legs.” And just for reference, flying from Miami to San Cristobal with a layover in Guayaquil is only 6 hours of flight time, so it’s closer than you think.
You can find hotels as low as $40 a night, but keep in mind they might not have air conditioning, in-room wifi, or parking. So it’s always good to check.
You will also need to obtain a Transit Control Card ($20), at Quito or Guayaquil airport before your flight, and pay the Galapagos National Park Entrance Fee ($100 per adult) when you arrive on the island. This is cash only, so be prepared.
Otherwise, everything is incredibly affordable. Our full-day tour was $180 per person, meals were as little as $6, etc.
Because the entry requirements for the island are so strict to protect the wildlife, I would recommend checking out my blog post about getting there.
I had trouble finding a lot of the specifics and spent A LOT of time researching, so that should really speed up your process. I would also just say, go in with respect for the people and the creatures there.
This is a sanctuary for not only some of the most incredible creatures in the world, but also an amazing culture.
So leave no trace, follow all the guidelines, and take the time to chat with locals and learn what it’s like to live in such a secluded but vibrant place.
